Pastor Kurt Johnson was in medical school in his native state of Oklahoma when he experienced a radical encounter with God and a call to ministry. After completing his MD, he and his wife Marla (also an MD) began traveling to the nations to share the Gospel and build up local churches. Through travelling ministry, and while serving in leadership positions in local churches, Kurt and Marla have enjoyed strong relationships with churches across denominational lines, including Vineyard churches, Assemblies of God, the United Methodist Church, Church on the Rock, Bethel Church in Redding California (Pastor Bill Johnson), and with the missions organization YWAM (Youth With A Mission) and the para-church organization Ellel Ministries.
After over 10 years of serving together in ministry, Kurt and Marla moved to Charlotte, and at God's direction, began preparations for Renaissance Church.
Kurt graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, and Summa Cum Laude from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine with a 4.0 grade point average. He also completed his medical internship at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh.
